Narrative
When Deputy Hargrove raided the Legion men's-room casino, Ricky "Vegas" Lankford went to collect the leg he'd won at poker. Too late. That son of a bitch had walked off without its owner, under Harlan Peavey's arm.
Harlan is a tan-shirt, side-part, Sunday-school man and the Legion treasurer. God love him, he could make stealing sound like something you needed a quorum for.
"I'm securing club assets."
"It ain't a club asset, Harlan. It's Delbert's damn leg."
"Delbert put it in the pot."
There was the trouble. Harlan wasn't disputing whose leg it was. He was disputing which column it belonged in.
At 1:30 a.m. they picked him up in the Legion parking lot, trying to fit it in a Buick trunk already full of bingo cages. Hell of a place to store a lower extremity, but the treasurer hadn't asked us. He kept saying "now hold on," polite as could be, like Hargrove was fixin' to approve last month's minutes without reading them.
In the Polaroid his arms stick out like he's still carrying it. Poor fellow looks ready to receive another donation. Delbert got the leg back Monday. Says it's been in a Buick; he can tell.
