Narrative
Before Adam "Double Adam" McCoy set the water tower on fire that night, Curtis Blevins tried to paint it. Adam's got his own entry. One municipal improvement at a time, for hell's sake.
Curtis climbed up at dawn with two gallons of white and a roller on a broom handle. He meant to cover PONDER COUNTY and write “something true.” Hadn't settled on what. He was gonna “let the tower tell him.”
Bless his heart, most of us can't get an answer out of the county at ground level.
The tower didn't say shit. The wind, however, had considerable input.
At 8:20 a.m. Deputy Hargrove found Curtis back on the ground, roller in hand, covered head to foot in his own paint. His pink T-shirt had been red an hour earlier. The tower was untouched except for one word he'd managed before the wind turned, eight feet tall: THE.
“THE what, Curtis?”
“I was getting to it.”
“Whole damn town's on the edge of its seat.”
Curtis's eyes are nearly closed in the Polaroid, speckled like a bird's egg. You want to laugh, but the man did climb a water tower for the truth. We mostly just holler for it from a stool.
The THE was still there when the fire started.
