Narrative

Randy Culpepper bought a tanning bed off a salon in Osage Beach that went under. No salon of his own, no room big enough at the house, so he set it in a horse trailer behind Sunset Lanes and ran an extension cord into the bowling alley's wall. Well, hell. Electricity don't care whether you've got a reception desk.

He's his own best customer. Look at those shoulders. That ain't a tan you get piddlin' around with yard work.

At 6:10 a.m. Deputy Stotts answered a call about "a blue light and a man's voice going 'ohhh' behind the lanes." She opened the trailer. Randy wore a tank top, a cap, a gold chain, and nothing you'd call pants. Eyes shut. Smiling like the light bill was somebody else's.

"It's for the dance tonight. You can't show up to the VFW pale."

"Randy, it's a horse trailer."

"Horses don't need it. They're outside."

"Your ass is inside, and I can see it from outside."

He didn't let that spoil a damn thing. God love him, all he wanted was to look nice at the dance. Some men buy a shirt; Randy cooks the parts that stick out.

He rode in without opening his eyes. In the Polaroid he still hasn't. Happiest man in the building, no bullshit about it. And he's orange.
