Narrative

Wesley Grimm called his float “Missouri's Bounty.” Flatbed, hay bales, eleven raccoons in a wire pen. He'd been live-trapping since Halloween. Most folks would've stopped at one raccoon and asked what the hell they were doing.

The Jaycees told him no Thursday. Wesley showed up anyway in a T-shirt with eagles and a canyon, smiling that little smile of a man who figures permission is mostly for indoor things. God love him, he'd brought the whole damn outdoors.

At 7:55 the Shriners' go-karts fired up behind him in the staging lot. Raccoons don't care for go-karts. Turns out they didn't care for his pen, either.

By the time Deputy Hargrove got the cuffs on, there were raccoons in the Baptist float's manger, in the Sonic Drive-In float's fake tater tots, and on the Jaycees' truck roof. One was inside the tuba Tyler Nance had just been arrested for. That son of a bitch had found the only parade seat with a bell on it.

“They're bounty,” Wesley said. “They'll come back.”

Nine did. Pretty fair return on a wildlife investment, considering the shit he'd put them through.

The calendar behind him in the Polaroid says September 1994. Nothing in this building is current.
